You have accessed the HTML version of the Ohio State University Computer and Information Science Department's User-Guide. This guide is an introduction to using the computer network provided by the Ohio State University Computer and Information Science Department. The computing facilities and the staff who run them are referred to as the Interactive Instructional Computing Facility or IICF. Faculty, graduate students and undergraduates will be using HP 715/64 Workstations which use the UNIX operating system (non-majors will using Sun Classics and should see the GCE Tutorial for more information). If you have only used micro computers (i.e., IBM PCs, or Apple Macintosh computers), UNIX will be very different from what you are used to. This guide will help you learn the basics of using UNIX in the IICF environment.
If you are already well-acquainted with UNIX, you will know most of the information in this guide. However, it is still a good idea to at least skim through the whole guide paying particular attention to the sections which cover features that are site-specific, such as 3.7 Printer-Related commands.
